Cookers

The cooker is arguably the most important of all kitchen appliances. We don't need to buy or replace them very often, but when we do we are faced with a wide array of different types to choose from. This guide focuses on freestanding cookers, where the oven, grill and hob are included in one neat package that fits into a gap between kitchen units.

Washing Machines

The sheer number of washing machines in the market today is enough to confuse the uninitiated. Before you buy you should ask yourself the following questions:

How much space is there in my kitchen?
How much laundry do I wash per week?
What type of fabrics do I wash?

Once you know the answers to these you'll be well on your way to making an informed decision.

Fridge / Freezer

Before you choose an appliance, you need to carefully consider your requirements and how much space you have available to you. These are important factors in deciding whether you need a separate refrigerator and freezer or a fridge-freezer.

Dishwashers

Before embarking on the search for a new dishwasher, bear in mind that there are other things to consider than space and price. Owning a dishwasher is no longer a luxury and you can save time, money and even energy by using one.

By using a dishwasher, the average household can expect to save around 300 hours in washing-up time over a year. So, if you value your time at just 1 per hour, you've already covered the cost of a basic dishwasher. And it takes just five minutes to load a dishwasher, plus there's no drying-up to do.

Vacuum Cleaners

Space-age designs and colours make choosing a vacuum cleaner as much a style decision as a practical one. Inspired by Dyson's successful departure from the traditional vacuum cleaner, manufacturers have been busy coming up with new developments to make cleaning your home easier and more effective. There are now self-propelled cleaners, ones with direct drive motors, models with back-saver devices to reduce back strain and mite-killing functions to zap those nasty dust bugs that can lead to allergic reactions and cause problems for asthma sufferers. New technology has introduced previously unheard-of power levels and even robotic cleaning - though it will be a while yet before robot cleaners are in the shops at affordable prices.
